This has happened so many times in the past - particularly for Pakistani cricketers - being named in Match Fixing deals. There have been suspensions and punishments and things have usually moved on.
However, the one that has come to light now threatens the very existence of cricket at Pakistan and could deal a deathly blow to their cricketing infrastructure.
First of all, there have been more than 7 players named in the controversy which is a record of its kind for the number of players from the same team - including the current captain!!
Secondly, there is ample evidence of the same as these cricketers have been caught in the midst of the tour unlike the past occurences when the events were reported few months after the incident or the series !! The police have found substantial cash with the players and their mobile phones have been confiscated - which will serve as proof to all the allegations being laid out there.
Thirdly, Pakistan cricket has been suffering from global isolation due to the breeding of terrorism on their home ground and tacit acceptance of this fact by the global community. Hence they have not played cricket in Pakistan for a long long time now. The last time, Sri Lankans made a valiant exception and tried to set an example. however, they were made to look like guinea pigs by the terrorists, with the players escaping by the skin of their teeth.
This incident now threatens the current series in England and if this is called off, then Pakistan will have few options left now as people were wary of visiting them to play cricket now they will be scared of hosting them due to the current controversy.
Moreover, Pakistani players have been missing on the moolah making opportunities that their counterparts are getting due to participation in IPL and through various series. This will put them in a downward spiral where they will be more hard pressed economically and will be sitting ducks for bookies and easily succumb to their offers.
Pakistani cricket - just like their comman man - is finally paying the heavy price of nurturing terrorism at home. The karmic cycle seems to have caught up with them where all the mindless mayhem and destruction are circling back to their source. Alas, Cricket seems to be one of the first high-profile victims but for sure - is not the last!
